Happy Birthday, Mahi

October 22, 2025: The nickname Mahi comes with big shoes to fill. The greatest all-format captain of the Indian men’s cricket team is my personal hero, and favourite wicket-keeper of all time. But recently, in a shocking turn of events, I have a new favourite Mahi.

It has come to my attention (through repeated observation, occasional overthinking, and some concern) that Mahika, who also goes by Mahi, is my new favourite Mahi. It also comes as a shock to me, that Mahi is, in most measurable ways, better than me.

She’s quicker on her feet, better in song and dance, sharper in arguments, and unlike me, can cook a meal that is delicious each time. She can’t chop vegetables as well as me though, in a necessary reminder to all of humanity, that you can’t have it all.

Also unlike me, she knows the difference between a brie, bocconcini, and a burrata and somehow convinced me to care. I like cheese now, y’all (and say y’all less, she is a woman of polish).

We met at BYJU’S in 2020. She was my team lead, which meant she had the unenviable task of managing copy, and me. She did both with unnerving efficiency, till she left and I was named Team Lead (with perhaps a more historic but controversial legacy). At the time, I thought she was just good at her job.

Five years later, I realise she’s good at everything (yes, everything). I also realise, now that we have been dating—she is very good at retaining talent.

Now she’s quietly redesigned my tastes, vocabulary, and possibly my entire sense of what constitutes “a nice evening” (it is ambiguous and has more possible outcomes than there are stars in the observable universe). “A nice evening”, is however, expensive, and includes cheese.

Watching her think and work is an education. Watching her unwind is worth rearranging a week for (and occasionally a weekend, maybe a lifetime). Looking at her, is also quite pleasant, she is kind on the eyes, and also generally kind.

If this sounds like adulation, that’s because it is.

Mahi doesn’t make life easier. She makes it fuller. Depending on the day, she is either the best or most eventful thing that’s ever happened to me.

So, on the occasion of her birthday, this is my small public thank-you:

For the laughter, the love, the wisdom, the imported cheese, and everything in between, thank you Mahi.

Love,

Samit

Press Release

A year’s wait and a yearbook

Hello mate,

If you’ve been around a calendar anytime recently you might have noticed that a year has gone by since our last day of college. That day also happened to be the day we shot our yearbook portraits. People have made a hobby out of asking me about the yearbook, so here is an update.

About that yearbook:

The yearbook is good to go, it’s ready and on my laptop. It hasn’t been printed yet, and I don’t intend to do that now for the following reasons:

1. The whole point of a yearbook is for other people to write in it, so handing out empty yearbooks will defeat the purpose of it.

2. There’s no use printing the yearbooks if most people won’t collect them now. Sending them via post won’t be feasible, so why print them and leave them lying in storage.

3. There is still a sliver of a chance we will have a proper convocation, probably in the latter half of 2021. College hasn’t confirmed anything yet, but whenever they give us our actual degrees will be the right time for a yearbook.

So yes, the Batch of 2020 will get a yearbook, a spanking gorgeous one, but I’m hoping it’s around when the batch reconvenes for our convocation. Stand by till then.

I hope you are alive, well, and employed. Cheerio.

Love,

Sam.

So basically,

I’m two weeks behind on this WEB but I don’t really have anything to say about that. I don’t really care, my brain is too busy (over) thinking other things.

This week I shared a cab with my former(?) crush, the one and only cause of my Smitten-ness, and the conversation was, let’s just say, unusual. To summarise, someone on the cab asked someone on the cab out on a date. But the latter refused. You’d be inclined to think it was me who did the asking out. But no, I was just the idiot who refused.

(?) aptly describes the state of my mind right now. Have I ceased being smitten? Have I thought over the same thing so much my brain just said no in protest? And now, my brain won’t think of anything else. And won’t help me figure things out either.

Like I’ve said before, this is the involuntary part of my brain I let be. It’s not hurting anyone, except me and other people occasionally. And somehow, it’s nice to have that part up, running and occupied. I guess I just blew through the maximum occupancy limit this week.

What is happening.

Cheerio!

Bipolar, matey!

That’s the weather. It was raining yesterday and it’s basically summer today. Ah good old weather talk. I miss awkward weather talk.

One of the thinks I’ve gotten better (very unexpectedly), has been conversation. I used to hate talking to a majority of people, but that’s gotten way better now. I almost never have awkward conversations about the weather anymore.

It’s probably because I’ve been bombarded with way to many people now. I have way more work at college, which invites a lot of delegation and way more people. Even juniors, which still look like weird small goblins to me.

I’ve had a lot of work of late, including projects. I have to film and edit 2 videos over the weekend. So I’m gonna stop here.

Cheerio!

Monday!

The day Garfield hates but I don’t. They signify productivity. And trust me, the economy would collapse if there wasn’t production. Boom. Mondays are capitalist.

I have spent this weekend in slumber. I caught up on astrophysics, tried to disprove the Big Crunch theory. See the Big Crunch theory is an extension of the Big Bang theory. The Big Crunch states that the universe will one day collapse, into an infinitesimally small ball of matter. The opposite of the Big Bang.

And it doesn’t make any sense. Firstly, the name is wrong. When stars and planets and matter collapse, they won’t make a Crunch sound. The universe is not potato chips. Secondly, you can’t just reverse some equations and claim a new theory. That’s algebra; a travesty.

I tend to nerd out during emotional turmoil. Turmoil is slight exaggeration, but smitten-ness took a big turn this week. There’s a weird vacuum, a threat of entropy. This, mate, is why I run away from matters of the heart. And now that I must confront one, I’m clueless. Which is very unlike me. I wish there was a science for non platonic relationships.

Till then, physics.

Another record smashed

Last week’s WEB on a Friday. I ain’t giving up. I shall persevere.

Big words from someone who slept 14 hours today. See, the launch for Detour happened on Tuesday, it was great, I finally slept yesterday, continued sleeping till today. Great couple of days.

But not a great week. See, the smitten-ness situation developed a whole new tangent I’m not fond of. I have a decision to make, one I wish she made for me. I’m in a situation so precarious bookies could make bets on it. I’m sure my friends are anyway.

‘It’s only a crush till the next one comes along’ was a philosophy I was a big believer of. It’s important that I mention that it was my philosophy. Everything is hell, more about that next WEB (tomorrow).

What is happening?

Damn.

This is the most unpunctual I’ve gotten with a WEB. But I’ve had one hell of a week (and a half). So much has happened, I’ve been busy, happy, sad, repentant, hopeful and lazy somehow.

The last WEB, 175 went out last Monday, a great day but a less than ideal night. Smitten ness dominated the rest of the week, so the overall the week was better than worse. A week to remember, except I don’t remember much of it.

I’ve had a lot of work to do around college, I routinely spend 12 hours of my day there. So evidently, I don’t have a life. “Get a life” – me, to myself. I’m not complaining tho, life is overrated.

Breaking Records.

I keep breaking records and winning awards. Just won the Nondescript Award for Outstanding Procrastination. I wish there were awards for procrastination, I’d go. Actually no, I’ll think about it.

Today (being Monday) is a big day. I (being an SY student) host my college orientation for freshmen. I’ll also get a bunch of awards for being a nerd and the movie I made will be screened. And we officially begin the journey to this year’s Detour, the one my batch will organize and the one I’ve been hard at work for.

My logo for the year, the animation I made for it’s video reveal (I learned After Effects!), the magazine I made all are unveiled today. I’m pretty pumped.

Smitten-ness is going up but nowhere (also going nowhere but up), Calling Sehmat is nice after all, After Effects is insane.

I should sleep now. Big day coming up.

Late!

This WEB is late and I have to go to bed to wake up for an early lecture so this is gonna be short and sweet matey.

I was reading Calling Sehmat, the book Raazi is based on. The movie is better. Once I’m done I’ll reread the Hitchhiker’s guide series by Douglas Adams, I’ve been forgetting things and need to brush up on my nerd.

I’ve been busy between three things off late: Learning Adobe After Effects (which is insane)(ly difficult), Helping a couple friends out with and PUBG. The order of those changes as per priority, but I like the last one the most.

I haven’t enjoyed playing a video game in a while so even tho it’s ridiculous and pretty eh gaming wise, PUBG has got me hooked.

In other things that have gotten me hooked, there’s my smitten- ess. Properly hooked. Fin!

On time.

After a long time. Feels nice to have free time, chill on weekends. Especially on  important weekends, FIFA weekends.

I’m 100% rooting for Croatia today, which is unlike most people. Who doesn’t like underdogs? (Most people). I’d love to see France lose. Pretentious country.

14th grade so far has been pretty cool. I really like my culture studies, media studies and digital marketing lectures. I do not like photography lectures, which was a surprise even for me. The year began with news that I stood first last semester as well. Nerd alert.

 – x –

The WEB before the line above was written before the match. This part I wrote after the match, and I’m bummed. The underdogs lost. The pretentious morons won. Somebodywhack em with a baguette.

I wasn’t particularly smitten this week, which only further confused my super confused brain. It was bittersweet. Don’t get smitten matey, you lose your marbles.
